A1 colors

Is there any setting that you use to make the colors on the A1 more vibrant? On some of my pics, the color seems a bit dull. Can anyone shed some light this? Thanks.

On some higher end cameras, the camera by default tries to make as little adjustments/enhancements to the image as possible. This is because these cameras are targetted to serious hobbyists who prefer to tweak the images on Photoshop later.

On the other hand, lower end cameras are targetted to people who will not be tweaking their photos, so these are set up to use more vivid, sharper, more saturated images by default.

The good thing is that both types of cameras usually allow you to override the settings.

On the A1, you can adjust the sharpness ( via Menu ), the color and contrast ( via the effects dial on the left side of the camera ). My suggestion is NOT to use these effects. These, once done, cannot be undone. You will get far better results spending 2 minutes on the image in Photoshop. You will also have far more flexibility on the type of post-processing you want to do, and get superior results.

Oh yeah, the A1 has a great feature : live histogram. Use this to ensure you have no blown highlights or featureless shadows.

If you set the camera to Vivid when you shoot, there is no way to undo it. My recommendation is to shoot in RAW and in sRGB. When you open a RAW file, you will be shown a menu which allows you to choose the colour adjustment value (-5 to +5). More flexible in my opinion. Downside of this, you require a large CF card.

Alternatively, when you are more confident with the colour setting, eg: always set it to colour +2 suits your taste, then fix it in the camera and start to shoot in JPEG. Save time in conversion and save CF space. :lovegrin:

apparently its due to the wider colour space that minolta uses.. at least for my case (I'm using a dimage 7hi btw)

what I do is I use natural sRGB, contrast -1, sat +2, ev -0.3 as my default
