A video shot with the 7D Camera

Hi all, I'm kind of a newbie to DSLR cameras, only owning one hand-me-down D70 that is barely up to scratch with today's DSLRs. But I am a videographer in nature so I generally rent or borrow the stuff. We shot this with a 7D camera for an Nparks competition - http://www.nparks.gov.sg/justbinit/videos/view/72

It was my first time EVER shooting with a DSLR so there are many mistakes in the video (too high ISO, some overexposed shots which had to be colored aggressively, and jello effects for some shots) so I would REALLY REALLY LIKE IT if you pointed more mistakes out to me :)

Of course regarding that video, if you like it please do cast a vote our way - we really need the votes considering the voting ends today, the 22nd July. You will need to verify your vote through e-mail, but hey if you feel our video deserves to win ahead of the other entries (do check them out too) why wouldn't you vote for us right? :D

Hey man,

I must say, the video is quite impressive! I like the plot and the way the shots are conceptualized.... the pacing is very good.

Can't really point anything bad about it... I guess everything, including the slight jerkness in the beginning adds to the "feeling" you are trying to achieve with the video.

Maybe the only inking I didn't like was the multiple shots of the "target" were all too similar, and not too interesting, I know its for build up, but if u compare that with the shots of the running soldiers, u know what I mean....all face shots.... Maybe mix a bit of interest in his hands or something would be nicer. :)

Hope that helps! Good job overall. :)

pegasus777: Thank you! :) However the jerkiness wasn't intended, it was just because we were on a shoestring budget so we improvised, using monopod and handheld for the shots with movement - i personally think it's a terribly boo-boo on my part... :/

I would have loved to get more shots of the litterbug but it was starting to rain.......... haha you can actually see in the binoculars shot and the scope shot, we used the scope and binocs 'texture' to cover up the very obvious raindrops in that shot!

i have since been told that the 5dmkii has better low light performance, and i realised a lot of the grain that came in these shots were a result of the high iso we had to use in the jungle on a very cloudy day :/

could you share with me whats your settings on yr 7D ? as in number of frames per seconds?

odyssey-boy: hi odyssey, it was if im not wrong the standard 1080p (1920x1080) 25fps setting. ISO ranged from like 800 to 3200 for the interior jungle shots because it was getting really cloudy with the rain and all...

excellent video..

hope you dont mind sharing..im a total newbie when it comes to dslr video..what sort of post-pro workflows did you apply

I shot mostly with 640 size at 60fps.

When I go at 1080, 60fps, my com reads with lack...

Mine is Kingston 8gb class 4. Guess prob is wif the card..

Nice production. One thing I am curious is at 0:48, the focus changes from back to foreground pretty fast. How was this achieved? I always have problem with switch of focusing with my 7D

Nice editing. Congratulations that you've won the grand prize!

Yes thank you guys.

Odysey: for most practical purposes i think 25FPS is pretty alright - for something high speed i have only gone like 720p 50fps and then conversion to playback at 25fps in compressor

aruns: Normally, it would be using MPEG streamclip, batch convert everything to Apple Prores and edit away! In this case my mac wasn't ready so using premiere pro cs4 trial. Use adobe media encoder to convert everything to 'P2 Movie' which is a DVCPROHD codec in mxf container - handles pretty well but normally going mac wouldnt go wrong.

paladin: manual focus man, manual focus. Hahahaa i never trust auto-focus when shooting video, even on conventional pro camcorders
