A slightly different Street Photography

Sorry if this is off-topic.

I wonder if you guys do take impromptu pictures on the plane ?

I do and found myself taking a whole 36 roll recently on a 7-hour flight.

Its interesting, because a lot of street photography concepts come into play.

For example, I zone focus the seats in front of me, so that I know how to focus without actually focusing. Available light is the other issue since the brightness can go from 1/15 and f2 to 1/60 and f4 fairly quickly. And of course, a smaller camera helps. My favorite is the XA which is uber compact.

It is also easier because there are events that will happen, eg. serving of food, inspections etc.

Here is a picture from last week.
Film used is Kodak Plus-X pushed >800ISO Developed in XTOL 1+1
1/30 and f2, M4-P with the 35 Cron.

Hi Raytoei

Nicely captured..most of them comes with a smile:)

My last few experience wasnt so good..some turned away when they know u want to take a picture of them..Some became very unnatural. So im guessing u must be quite a charming guy for some of them to pose for u:)

pikapig, you are too kind. Actually, the small form factor of the rf helps.

very very good. 1st the girl is beautiful, the exit sign and the curve due to the shape of the plane complements the female form.

I've taken photos on the plane, but not a whole roll! :D

Hey there, this is good stuff. Very novel and commendable, plus one for the Singapore girl.

Nice capture...shooting entire roll during the flight is admiring...never try...SIA girl are friendly...hmm...can generate conversation too...any other interesting shots to share?

Nice !!! I like the SIN to DXB :)

nice series!
May try it next time but I don't think I can pull it off:embrass:

Nice series! Thanks for sharing.
Maybe should take out my 20 years old unused XA on my next trip....hahaha

Realise no one suggested looking at Garry winogrand's arrival and departure. .. less on plane but more on the ariport.

whoa i didnt know airplane can take pictures wan

well, there are several situation which favors zone shooting:

issuing of hot towels
issuing of headset
serving of food
serving of drinks trolley
clearing up
checking before landing

I usually prefocus on several seats ahead of me and I wait.

It is usually better to just snap and let them tell u if it is allowed or not.

If you ask them, they will usually say no :)

I think some flight attendants are more flattery-operated than others. Some don't like it while
I have more successes with Emirates and SQ

:)

Very nice... I've done this a couple of times while flying back to Singapore but not much... I usually get a big fat "no" from them but again maybe because i was shooting with a D3s... He he he.. Will try next time with a RF....

my most "bordering-on-invasion-of-privacy" photo is this one:

She was siting next to me .... You can only do this with a rangefinder, which in this case was a Olympus XA without the flash attachment.
