A question for XPan users

Hi XPan users,

Grateful if anyone can enlighten me on the mounting of the view finder of the 30mm f5.6 lens, especially between the Fujinon and the Hasselblad versions. I noted that the view finder for the Fujinon is mounted on the hot shoe, while the Hasselblad version is mounted on top of the camera view finder using an extra extension plate attached to the hot shoe. Aligning the 30mm lens view finder with the camera view finder is to resolve the parallax problem? In that case, why should the Fujinon lens view finder be mounted on the hot shoe? Quite puzzling since the two lenses are essentially identical (all made by Fuji although one is labeled Hasselblad).

Many thanks in advance.

Hi XPan users

Since I am not getting any replies, I did a deep search and obtain some answers which I would like to share with everyone.

The Fujinon UBC 30mm f5.6 lens (silver color), although its construction and performance are almost identical to the Hasselblad version (black), does not come with the center filter, i.e. one would have to buy this filter which costs a small bomb. The view finder is also silver color but does not have a mounting plate like that of the Hasselblad but is mounted directly on the hot shoe. Some said it is neater than the Hasselblad version. Since focusing is still done through the XPan or TX body through the normal view finder, I suspect the reason for mounting the view finder off centre as in the case of Hasselblad is to compensate for the parallax error when the scene to be taken is near. I do not have both versions so I cannot conclude from here. After much search on the web, I have located and ordered a Hasselblad version of the 30mm f5.6 and it will arrive some time next week. I shall make some comparison from the view finder vis-a-vis the actual scene taken and make a brief report, if anyone is interested at all.

Many thanks for reading :D

AYC - thanks for sharing.

as you suggested, i don't think that there would any difference in the fujinon and hassey lenses that accounts for the different placements of the evf. evfs are best placed directly above the lens, this provides a more correct horizonal perspective of the frame, while it would still be slightly off vertically. the evf would also not adjust for parallax error for near subject... this would have to guaged with experience.

in short, i can only think of the evf placed above the vf to be for convenience for the photographer to quickly toggle between focusing and framing. but ultimately, placement of the evf above the lens may serve to be more beneficial. my $0.02...

Hi Jack

I fully agree with you. By placing the evf above the vf, the main advantage is out of convenience. The photographer can shift from one to the other much easier, i.e. from framing to focusing. It is strange that TX and XPan deviate at this point as otherwise, almost everything is identical. Some said "Hasselblad" lenses have higher QC which I doubt so. Other said coating is better.

Many thnaks for sharing.
