Frankly speaking, you want a rangefinder with a quiet shutter I would recommend you to purchace a Leica M4-P (cheaper than Bessa R2) instead.

Hi,

Yes, maybe, but the bessa R/R2 has other good things: very, very bright viewfinder/rangefinder (brighter than the M6!), and built-in lightmeter.......are you sure the Bessa R2 is more expensive than the M4-P? How much are these going for then? I have seen M4-P at more than SGD 1400......

Stephen Gandy on his site www.cameraquest.com stated that the R2's production is stopped and the new bessa R will be announced in Photokina 2004. Will see what is the new bessa R like come end Sep. :)

A new R2 can be had at about 400 plus USD, check out cameraquest.com to see!

Not sure if this is accurate, but this tiny jpeg shows the new Bessa.

Looks like the Bessa R3 still does not have the automatic frame-line selector.
It also seems to have a shorter base-length.

Of more interest on the carl zeiss website is a possbile zeiss ikon rangefinder that may be introduced at photokina 2004. Not much more information.

Some said it's a digital RF but some said it's a Bessa R3a twin.. judge for yourself. Whatever, the Biogon sure looks sweet

This time Leica bao ci liao :D

I guess it really boils down to the pricing and other details. Contax (ironically owned by Zeiss, and now made/assembled by Kyocera) and Leica are the foremost film rangefinders that are possibly under threat.

To Leica, pricing? wat's that?? Guess what's their "answer"?

Leica Oskar Barnack Prototype 2 Limited Edition

Price? US$3500 only

I reckon Leica really needs a lot of suckers to survive ( xxx Leica songs won't really help :bsmilie: )

Like the old saying, to each his own. But with a rich history and heritage that Leica has, and that Leica Camera AG is partly owned by design house Hermes, it is not difficult to fanthom why Leica does what it does, and why they are good at doing it i.e. selling overpriced camera bodies. All said, I don't really care what Leica does, I just hope that the new Carl Zeiss body and lenses will be as affordable as the current Contax G systems.

Guess what? some claim that the Zeiss lenses for the Zeiss Ikon camera are Leica M-mount!!

If that is indeed the case, then the hope "affordable" will remain just that, hope :(

Back to the R3A & R2A,

More Bessa info out

downright ugly, like a Zorki :thumbsd: (some even said it's hideous) But at 1/5 of Leica's price, cannot really complain rite?

The x1.0 VF on the R3A is interesting though..

Choosing between R2A & R3A may be difficult!
:D

This is a wonderful news. Finally, a new rangerfinder with 40mm frameline. Currently Leica CL and Minolta CLE has this 40mm frameline.
And a 40mm/1.4 fast lens. The Rokkor and Summicron has only F2.
But what happen to the 28mm frameline ??
Will wait for user reviews before getting it.

Many thanks to all who contributed and share. thanks.

Get a used Leica M6! Just look at how nice this camera is!!!
