That depends on what you are trying to acheive. The 9xi will stand up better to abuse and has a faster motor; it also has two rubberized control wheels and a better grip. It also "features" (Ha!) an extremely awkward and half-baked interface, not without its points, but generally hated by most photographers. The 5 may well focus faster, and has more focus points. It can also control wireless flashes with its built-in flash, something the 9xi can never do (it lacks a built-in flash and must use another flash, or the special flash controller unit).
As ninelives note, you are comparing two very different beasts. The 9xi is older technology but made as a pro tool. The 5 is a modern entry level camera. They have thus extremely different target markets, feature sets, interfaces, and quality. To recommend one or the other is impossible without knowing what you intend to do with this camera.
