The HSM tends to hunt alot when use on a F80 and F65 body.
Not so sure about F100 or F5.

The AFS 80-200 is a much better performer even in dim light condition.

How about the HSM on an F4s? As compared to the AFD-n....

thanks!
what about specifically the motors? speed and quietness?

It might be better for you, if can go down personally to evaluate both lens. I can assure you that the Nikkor len is definitely a much better choice.

I'm afraid, I've not tried it on the F4s, maybe others in here might help. ;)

Thank you for the informative comparison.

Is this with the Nikkon AFD-n 80-200?

Yup, the Nikon AF 80-200mm f2.8 IF ED, the version juz b4 AFS come out. :)

Also, guys, it's not fair to compare AFS with Sigma...

Nikon AF 80-200mm f2.8 IF ED VS Sigma 70-200mm f2.8 EX APO HSM
My comparison (own personal experience): added some more
AF speed: Sigma faster, perhaps due to HSM
AF accuracy: Same
AF hunting: Equal rates, but I find the Nikon hunts more, but you can limit it
Built: Equal (both are built like a tank)
Hood: Hehe not important but I prefer the flower hood from Sigma
Colour: Sigma better
Contrast: Similar
Price: Nikon about $300 more
Filter size: both 77mm
Tripod collar: both have, but i forgot whether nikon one can take out anot
Weight: Nikon feels slightly heavier to me
AF noise: Nikon much louder than Sigma
Sharpness: Similar
f2.8: Sigma produces softer images than Nikon
f8: Similar results
Zoom ring: Sigma comes very stiff, needs some time to let it be smoother. Nikon comes smooth.
Manual focus override: Sigma yes, Nikon no. Turn the focus ring when in AF, the Nikkor breaks.
On D100: Sigma incredibly fast, Nikon slower; Hunting same
On F90X: Equal AF speed; Equal hunting
On F5: Equal AF speed; Equal hunting
On F100: Sigma faster; Equal hunting
On F4s: Equal AF speed; Equal hunting

not that useful wide open...
what does that mean?
light fall off? low contrast?

showtime, the Sigma performs less admirably in the contrast and sharpness department when shot wide open. There is noticable light fall off too but this ain't as bad as those I mentioned earlier. :)

the HSM might not work on a F80 body.. need to be rechip..
so its better to bring ur body down for testing if u r getting the HSM...

as for nikon lenses, NO WORRIES!!!

it seems ok wif my d100 though... getting a f80d, hope it works too... otherwise i gonna get afs 80-200 liao...

Rechipping is free even outside of warranty so this shouldn't be much of an issue.

It is said that lenses with serial numbers starting with 4 might be safe.
