sure cost around S$1800???...

I think this is getting to be rhetoric... I've used the 717 and it is one of the best I've seen, SLR or not. to compare I have also used the d100 with a prime lens shooting under the same crappy office lighting. seriously not a consideration unless u print in 72-144 dpi.
colour is more important. sony's red is not so bad in the 717, but still sad in the fishcake P series...
even my 3mp minolta at 400 looked bad on screen but looks like 200 on lab print. 4R of course.
think the current batch of prosumers losing to dslr is only AF/motordrive speed, misc funcs like lens change, mirror lockup, higher (1600++) ISO.
else a digicam is more convenient, takes more pictures.
I wonder about canon's new low-end dslr, if it matches the price pt of the f828 and offers similar features (remember it's low-end) then I'd definitely buy the f2-2.8 CZ lens, which I have experienced and converted. (Leica Pana lenses still have not given me a convincing shot)

quite true, although I must say the fm50 and the bp511 are 2 of the most ridiculously long life batteries I have tried...
AAs' main advantage is the last resort use of alkalines as well as upgradeable capacities...

Well, that's a pity, but considering that this camera is expecting to
be quite long battery life, shouldn't pose too much problem.
It's size and weight (and price) is probably going to be a bigger issue,
significant enough that it might not be a camera of choice for extended back country use.........
When I first saw the specs, it was a "Whoa" :bigeyes: moment. But then it got me thinking: this cam is purely for consumers who are attracted or (their perceived) need the megapixs.
Why? Well, with the trend that is going, Canon and Nikon are coming out with cheaper DSLRs which would be better (do your own comparison of why) that this Sony cam. It all depends on the price that Sony puts up. Furthermore, a fixed 28-200 lens? The price for a third party lens would not be too much higher + a DSLR.
The only other advantage is that the Sony cam has movie modes that is not possible with a DSLR so it is targetted at the consumers who have $$$ to spend on.
