Is it possible? Has anyone tested the lens for such purpose? Care to share some pics?
I'm going for a concert and thought of getting this lens for some shots ;p

Depending on the light conditions, mostly it will not be enough (the 70-300VR) for such shoots.

Unless you're situated near the front and have good lighting, then this lens may be ok. However, if you're pretty far away, and the lighting is intermittent and changing, this lens will be a waste of time.

I've taken before quite a few "flash prohibited" stage events and found out the hard way that VR is almost useless as VR doesn't stop motion blur, you'll need high iso (but more noise) or a fast lens (large aperture) to stop the motion. I recently used a 80-200 f2.8 lens for a play with terrible lighting at iso 400-800 just to get a shutter speed of 1/50 to 1/150 which is barely enough to stop motion. I used b4 my 55-200VR for a shoot and have to take at shutter speed of 1/20 at iso 1600, ending up being a waste of my time...

So I personally don't recommend getting/using a 70-300VR for such events. I assume that indoor concerts would mean a singer on stage right? I don't think he will keep still for you to shoot at 1/20...unless you prefer motion blurs! Invest in a large aperture zoom lens...if you always shoot such events. If not rent one for the concert.

My 2 cents!

No digitals to show you...cos last time shot on films.

ISO 3200 Konica...F4 200mm....shutterspeed is around 1/30 or 1/60 EV compensate 1/2 stop (cos a lot of black areas)

No flash...

Sorry but kinda lost here...

What is it that the organisers dun allow DSLR to be in concerts ?

I use to shoot in concerts (back in the films days lah) without any problem as long as you dun use flash.

In fact I'm not sure if DSLR is allowed in concerts these days. I used to see people taking pictures without flash in the indoor stadium. I guess I'll just try but if I'm blocked, I'll just leave the camera in my car.

Have anyone tried the sigma 50-150/f2.8 or tokina 50-135/f2.8? Are these lens good for concerts? How about the sharpness and IQ?

If you are going for concerts .... read the terms and conditions on the ticket itself. Most often Esplanade wouldnt allow photography inside the concert or theatre.

But then again, are you going for the concert to enjoy or just go there to shoot ? :bsmilie:

The AF-S VR 200mm f/2G IF-ED, ur ultimate ticket to indoor action! :sweatsm:

f2.8 might not even be enough...use 85 f1.4. might not be close enuf but can still crop and pay more to get front seat helps...

Was it the Copeland-Anberlin gig last night?

Most indoor concerts do not allow DSLR.
You may want to check out with the organizer first to avoid disappointment.

I tried a few shots using 70-300 VR at one of the local productions at theatre and they turned out ok. I have wanted to post the pictures but have no idea how to do it. :p

Sorry, I don't really know about this lens: 70-300 VR .

Mine is AF Nikkor 75-300mm, F4.5 (5.6 in orange dot). I have tried it at Genting and some of the pictures are not bad.

I choose to release the shutter when the singer is still or without much action and most important is, I rest both hands on my camera bag for steady shots as I did not bring a stand.

I am not sure about whether can concerts in Singapore bring in DSLR, as I don't intend to get my camera "detained".

But most important is, the "VIP" seats at the Indoor Stadium are all flat and not near to the stage. So, even a 300mm zoom is insufficient.

Hope this will helps.

As for the apeature, I think I set it to 1/60. You cannot set it to too low as the object that you are going to shoot moves. Next is, my ISO I remains at 200 (the lowest that I can go). Tried some shots using 400/800 and the effects sucks.

I did not select AUTO function as the ISO might go up to 800.

I would recommend you to buy the 85mm 1.4 with ISO 800 to get the shots.

get 2nd hand cost just abit more than the 70-300mmVR

i have the above 2 lenses.

 then the stadium you went must be very very bright... 1/60 f4-5.6 @ ISO200.

prefer to use a faster lens (maybe a prime?). else u might get a lot of motion blur even if u were very steady as the singer(s) might be moving.
