After hearing my IS mechanism operating, I think I will avoid IS in future if possible. Kinda scary...

Yes, the gyro of the IS can be heard!

yup..they are high in demand..

So what if the IS can be heard? still works perfectly...

Anyway this might be off topic... if you are not willing to pay extra for the 70-200 IS, dont bother with the non IS and get the new sigma 70-200/2.8 with the "macro feature"... it is slightly more expensive than the F4 and comes with tripod foot... (if you factor in the cost.. it is almost the same.. at least in the US)

Im only worried the life span of our IS at the rate its gyro is spinning everytime we use the lens... I supposed its at least few thousands (or tenth of thousands) RPM??

Personally, i dont think it is such a huge problem. I only heard one or two stories of IS failing and this problem is not as widespread as the other problem this lens has (ERR 099 when the mount is flexed and the power dips casuing an error msg).

I think you can put your worries to rest. You can check with Canon Singapore what the repair cost. I think in US it is 600USD? No idea. And if you buy it new, you have the guarantee it will work for a while.

aiyah, whatever eqpt you use, if you want to baby so much, then go back to film. sure no ccd/cmos problems.

IS? afraid it'd wear out? sell away before it spoils. or sue canon for designing such a "funny thing".

eh guys.. i got the f4 yesterday.. decided to used the remaining sum for xbox 360 and a new monitor...still got some spare cash.. if there's a need, then i'll upgrade to the IS eventually... anyway, the according to oracle, the IS version may be too big and bulky for my puny 350D+grip...hahaha.. thanks guys!

hey, what's wrong with IS version on 350D? i've got the IS on my 350D+grip, it not too big or bulky. and got to clarify with oracle coz that's where i got my IS and he doesn't advice anything about bulk and chunky on 350D!

hhmmmmmmmmm..... duno leh.. tats wat he told me..
hows ur new lens?
