Fast yes... it is same lens design as my 80-200 f2.8 APO G HS... and yes it is sharp...

Where in Singapore I can try the lens?

Since the exchange rate is good, there is high possibility if I am too tempted, I will get it and sell my older 80-200 f2.8 APO G HS... I like the lens mainly because of Minimum focus distance of 1.2m rather 1.6m (or is it 1.8) on 80-200.

Sulhan mentioned this lens over-exposed easily? :bsmilie:

Not enough Data to confirm this though.....need more hands on...

lens design confirm not the same. it is more tune towards bokeh then sharpness. Another strength is the difference in min focus length. 1.8m for 80-200 and 1.2m for 70-200 SSM. they are different ;)

Oh.. ok... good to know they are doing more in terms of BOKEH... 80-200 has great bokeh.. so if they tune the bokeh, it will be worthwhile...

Yes.. 1.2m minimum focus distance is useful.

can... if u XMM i let u try first

;p

So many ppl like the 70-200, why not u all share n buy one. See who need it, then use it. If got 2 or more using on the same day, ballot for it lor. Let's say got 5 ppl buying, if the lens ard $3.3k, each of you come out with $650 on avg and keep it in someone house who you all can trust lor. ;p I think 5 person just nice as too many, sure a lot of them want to use one :D

Hiee Geno....

The 70-200SSM is really great.....however....considering the lens itself with not much of othe factors (comparing optics to the Sigma 70-200EX APO DG - best alternative)i guess the lens is kind of over priced.

As i used(hands-on) to have the 70-200EX APO - four time now ......(DG not much diff on the AF mechanism).....i dont see any reason that i can justify for just the white body and SSM for addition $1500++.

I tried the lens out......personally and sad to say the circular aperture is obviously a plus if stopped down a little.

Overpricing - there may be several reasons to this.....such as....limited quantity , low yield ,low volume , hence price controlled - They would be crazy enough to make material stand by and made to order .......

But like any other product.......for each his own.....if he/she can afford.....obviously you know which us the choice.

Just like the D7D.....where prices drop at the launce of the 5D......once the 5D users demand the SSM lens too.....the volume would go up for production and hence possible price lowering....(by consumer industry pattern).

Sharing........i don't think is wise to share on any investments such as lens -though tangible - managing rotational usage is not as easy as one may think....

Well....most importantly.....get the lens you need .......use them.

I agree with Sulhan about the optical quality.. (contrast and sharpness perhaps?) between the two lenses. But there are still different between them, and whether the difference justify for the price different..

1) Its a Minolta. 3rd is usually priced lower than main manufacturers, and keep in mind that main manufacturers are not responsible for compatilibly (and future) of your 3rd party lens. So that means, you investment may become worthless suddenly should Minolta change its technology. My advise: buy 3rd party for what you need now, not as long term asset.

2) Circular Blades. Although I've not direct comparison between the two, but Minolta circular blades is known to produce pleasing bokeh. I've seen one test done with Carl Zesis, Canon, Minolta 85mm.. not hard for us to guess which one is minolta (not surprise others guess wrongly).. :bsmilie:

3) Minimum focus distance of 1.2m (KM) compared to 1.8m (S). is this useful to you? I not sure.. my 70-210/4 can focus about that distance.. I'm sure I've taken shots at this distance with 70mm focal lenght.

4) Additional features : Focus-range limiter,* Three focus-hold buttons,* AF/MF switch,*. From my own experience, I find that focus-range limiter can be very useful to speed up the AF in many situation. And focus-hold button (also can be DOF preview), comes very handy too, it is more convenient than reaching for the DOF button on body when hand on the grip (somemore this lens got 3!!)

5) Two DMF modes* (KM). Those who use Canon USM (and Nikon silent wave) will know this. The lens allows you to override the AF anytime when it is doing the AF. I've limited experience (tried my friend's 70-200L IS) applying this technique but I think it is useful. Even Micheal from Luminous Landscape complaint about it (rather lack of) when he reviewed 7D with the older lenses last year. I wonder if HSM (S) can do the same..

6) Most obvious different.. with SSM (KM).. assuming it should help in AF speed and obviously it will be more quiet and smoother when AF.

In conclusion, is above extra features and differences able to help you to justify the different in pricing? ($1500 like Sulhan said?) Do you need them? I know forbytes always complain about AF noise in quiet place (valid reason!) :bsmilie:

Or...

Just simply say, "I support Minolta!"

Just my 0.02.

pardon my ignorance but wat is bokeh? and how does this lens compare with the canon 70 - 200 f2.8L lens? anyone know? thanks

its hard to compare different lens on different system unless you can put all the lens into 1 camera body...

bokeh is the out of focus area of the picture... its not to be confused with a out of focus picture... bokeh is that that patches which are out of focus, as oppose to the sharp image.
