[5D2] SAJC Community Work 2010

I'm a 17yo student studying in a SAJC. My October exams are over, and my 5D2 was just recently bought. So I thought it would be fitting for me to start trying video for my community involvement program (CIP) as part of the year-end activities.

I will update this thread as each video is completed. I challenged myself to cut a highlights video from every session of CIP my group goes through, which means about 7 or 8 sessions in a month. I'm not sure if I can hit this target, but I will try

Day 1 - vimeo.com/15958184
The first day was about all CIP groups going to Ghim Moh road, and then surveying the residents in the 2 room flats (very, very cramped) about the elderly, their problems etc. It was my first time shooting video. 5D2, 24-70L (+ 50 1.4 for one shot), LCDVF, Rode Videomic direct into camera. No rig or audio recorder.

+++++

Day 2 - vimeo.com/16122974
8 students from SAJC Non-PW 2010 (including Yours Truly) volunteered to befriend and provide wholesome activities for the needy elderly so that they could stay socially connected and active. Both us students and the elderly would head over to Metropolitan YMCA, Singapore, twice a week for fun filled activities.

---Sorry about the jerky shot from 4:12, it was a mistake on my part---

Tell me what you guys think! :)

Cheers,

I'm just wondering what is your focus for your highlights, what do you like the viewers to take away.

This is purely for archival / documentation purposes so that the next batch of students will be able to know exactly what we're doing. I used to shoot stills alone, but that didn't work out when it came to speech etc.

just my 2cents,

love the quality of the 5DmarkII, when doing establishing shots or tilting panning movement use a tripod thats the best, some frame u are second guessing ya shots, thats why some of ya frens head are cut off, or the movement aint smooth, handholding and trying to zoom in is not easy on a dslr, i suggest u go tighter by zooming with ya feet...

dont need to splurge on high end shoulder rig or whats not, unless u going to make money of it, get those MIC ones will do, or the mini tripod from artworkfoto also will do to help stabilize your shots...

overall a delightful video to see... looking forward to more of it...

Ahh, I got a korean rig. Suits me fine, next up would be to get a proper video fluid panning head. No stock at CP for the manfrotto 501HDV. I'm shooting tomorrow and will be using an arca-swiss ballhead for now. Not smooth panning, but anything's better than handheld.

Thanks for the comments!

Nice video, very touching story from the old lady.

IMHO, I think IS is needed here, the first few shots were kinda shaky. There is also occasional 'glimpse' of other object such as, your friend's hand which can be quite disrupting especially if they are out of focus.

I kinda liked that little shake in the introduction for video 1. It would certainly have been boring if it was as still as a photograph... Thanks for the comment btw!

Here's Video 2! :) Working with the elderly at Metropolitan YMCA Singapore!

Haha, that's a good point. You can try panning by or zooming into the subject, I guess that would be good.
