5600 HSD problem!

Hi,

I attached my 5600HS flash to my 5D today but the flash refused to activate. The flash LCD display is on and the camera LCD shows that the flash is detected as well. I tried changing lens and taking numerous test shots etc. but no success. However, I could see that the flash LCD display could not register the zoom range changes even though I was using a 'D' lens.

Surprisingly, when I detached the flash and pressed the test button, the flash would go off consistently so it is not a battery or bulb problem!

I then proceeded to test the wireless flash function using the onboard popup flash and the 5600HS and the 5600HS can be successfully triggered.

Even stranger, I then attached the 5600HS back to the camera and the LCD display could now register the zoom changes correctly. At this moment, I thought that the flash was OK again and took a few test shots. To my dismay, the flash did go off consistently but all the pictures were severely underexposed.

I bought this flash brand new a few months ago and did not encounter any problems until today. Do I send in the camera or both the camera and flash?

It is still under warranty but Sony service center apparently only takes over 1 April 2006 so who do I go to in the meantime?

I heard KMSC no longer accept items, so have to wait til 1 April then approach Sony shop. They even remove the telephone number form their website.

Is it contact problem?

yeah, officially, they will not receive anymore requests. But they are still willing to help with simple problems. Maybe you can still ask them to take a look if you got the time. But if it is a major defect you will probably need to wait til next month...

Try cleaning the contact on your camera. Use some cotton buds with alcohol and clean the contact on your camera. Make sure your camera is off and the batteries taken out. Check your flash contact are OK and not bent or oxidized.

Do u do a reset before mounting? like press + and - together for 3 seconds? Obviously, I had this underexposed prob when the setting was messed up if I didn't use the flash for sometimes..so I just reset whenever I want to use it again. It's kind of weird but it solved my problem.

Did yr flash fire a pre-flash? I had a similar problem with my flash and after cleaning the contacts on the camera and flash, it was resolved. In my case, the flash only fired once when I had the problem. Good luck.

Thanks for all your advice!

Tried the "+/-" resetting and cleaning the contacts. Pictures are still severely underexposed(as if there was no flash at all). It seems that the 5600HS is not firing a pre-flash. I have no problems with the onboard pop-up flash.

I don't know whether i need to send both camera and flash in or just preferably the flash. Anyone staying in the West with a Dynax 5D/7D that can test my flash so that I can determine whether it's just my flash at fault or both?
