well, will just use tripod which i already hav. Otherwise, there will be no end of buying this and that to support this hobby. ;)

you can always rent a lens :)

decided to buy already. as 2nd hand 70-300mm G lens is so cheap. Later, resell wont lose much also. :)

oh ya but renting costs how much per day for this lens?

hi,

Recently, my frd asked me to shoot for school football event. Will 55-200mm range be enough to shoot soccer player in action?

or will 70-300mm non-VR with tripod will help? as I hav tight budget, i may not afford to buy VR version one. :(

Depends on where you are seated. If you are seated at the sideline, near where all the actions are (normally near the goal post), then 55-200mm is sufficient.

But then, your other concern is, can your 55-200mm focus speed keep up with the fast moving players? because they will be jumping up and down while chasing after the ball, but won't stand still and wait for their photos to be taken.

Personally, I've used the 80-200 f2.8 for the SLeague at the sideline, and the success rate is quite low. I would have preferred a lens with AF-S motor for faster focus speed.

~ $40 plus

i used to own the 70-300 G good luck without VR is a i can say! unless its a bright day and u need at least 1/500 for sharp photos. at the long end it's soft. when you complain abt your 17-50 tamron is soft this will be much worst

Just to note, the 70-300mm G lens doesn't have IF, focusing will be slower because the entire barrel turns.

Really? no body here mentioned about barrel turns. I can imagine how slow it will be if barrel has to turn to focus.
luckily, today deal didnt go through cuz of few dust inside. I didnt take it.

In that case, can i use that teleconvert 2.5x thingy on my tamron 17-50mm 2.8 lens to get 200mm range?

Srry, I'm very new. Plz advise me. thz :(

not advisable...focusing will be slowed down with a teleconverter...either rent a good lens like one of the bros mentioned or get a new/2nd hand 55-200 VR....

Bro... I have used the 70-300mm G lens, 55-200mm VR and the 80-200mm... for action-related scenes before I can tell you that:

1. the quality is miles apart, with the 70-300mm G lens performing worst at 300mm
2. the focusing speed is really crucial, and I wouldn't count on the 70-300mm to give you a good focus fast enough
3. you need at least 1/320s (I personally recommend 1/400~1/500s) to get a good shot. That's why I'm not convinced that f5.6 is gonna give you that.

Just take note, for sports photography, the sky is the limit for equipment. Scott Kelby said something along the line like sports photography just buy equipment.. and not too bothered with the price tag!!

Photographic is very generic topic with specialization. Like we all studied physics and some end up as electrical engineer, some Mechanical, some civil, some physics professor and so on. I think its not easy to cover all forms of photography at 1 go. there is sports, Landscape, street photography, event and many many more....

quite enlightening......

well, i guess.... the best is to figure out how to make use of what i have already had. Otherwise, BBB virus will not end. :bsmilie: As 'Saycheese' commented, the sky is the limit.

Renting equipment is not an option for me also as I won't get paid.

As such, I think I will just station near goal post and capture 'hero' shots of my school team with my tamron 2.8 lens. I sure just from sidelines, can get a great shots. Furthermore, cropping somemore will make a wonder. :)

Forgot to mention, I will be just there to shoot for my school team, but not for both sides. So....stationing near opposite team's goal post will do. no need running.

Sounds like a good idea.. and see if you can capture the team photo before the game, the shaking of hands and so on. not to forget, troop to the corner flag to shoot your friend taking coner kick! Snap the spectators too!

I would recommend you to go down to the site with 1 or 2 friends and see what your lens can do under the particular lighting. What your level of zoom can do..

You are a student and you sound like you have a tight budget (Well, I do notice a lot of students are leading a more expensive lifestyle than me!!). Do what you can afford.. Besides rental, you can also BnS and assume you get a ok price, you should be able to sell it off at the price you purchased within 1-2 weeks, especially when the item is popular... (and you dun get a lemon).. But some items not that easy to sell, like 1980s lens.... But there are always some luck involved, like nikon suddenly reduce price of products.

Oh, see whether can borrow a 15X zoom compact!! its better to have 1 than no zoom at all right?
