50mm prime lens for portrait

Assuming you can get the Zeiss sonnar 50/1.5 at xf56mm price, which lens will you get ?

really like the compactness and the old school design of the zeiss............hmmmm

how much did you pay for the jupiter ? any idea the street price of the sonnar 50/1.5 ?

J3 iirc mine was $400 in very good condition.
Thru a friend.
I think for the same quality, I usually see it at $450 iirc.

I would think the more modern zeiss sonnar zm is better.
But what? 3x the price?? Not sure....

Also, Sonnar and Planar are 2 different beasts imo.
One is a soft sharp drawing style, more center sharp.
Basically a character lens.
The other is a flatter field f2 lens.
All round ok.
Sort of a reliable all rounder lens.

Honest word though.
I think a dirt cheap $40 J8 is often as good and costs peanuts when comparing j3 and j8.
Imho, often better bokeh from j8 straight off.
The sonnar rendering seems more obvious straight off at f2.
J3.... I feel at f1.5, bokeh cwn vary from harsh to very nice. (As my thread also show)
It seems to get more 'stable' by f1.8-f2 in which case, it's the same as using j8. :D
f1.5 is nice of course, also larger looking oof highlights than j8 even with both stopped down the same f stop.

If you want rf 50mm.
Fast, not to ex, reliable in most situations, generally reliable bokeh
Look at the Canon ltm 50mm f1.4.

Legacy SLR 50mm.
I prefer pentax for the color, smc coating, size, build and compatibility to an existing system (ie. Not an orphan mount)

My few cents.

Depends on going for character or all round dependability.
As a generalist shooter, I will go for the fuji first.
Later lba sure ti strike again, then get something different like the Sonnar.

My few cents
