50mm 1.7 or 28mm 2.8?

Hi Folks,

Looking for a prime, and based on discussions previously, difference between the 50mm 1.7 and 50mm 1.4 is not significant enough to justify the differnece in price. But what about between the 50mm 1.7 and the 28mm 2.8. I know got quite a lot of difference in price, but is the as you are paying more for a wider but slower lens, but what about sharpness, which is better?

Personally, depend on your usage.

If you are using on 7D, 50mm is way too long for normal photograph. But 28mm f2.8 is very good in the sense it gives you 42mm. Its a very good lens. I have both 28mm f2 and 28mm f2.8. 28mm f2 is sharper than f2.8 version.

Sharpness wise, 50mm f1.7 might be slightly sharper than 28mm f2.8.

My trend of thought when deciding which lens to buy:

• Too rich? --> Buy all.
• Too poor? --> Why buy?
• 1/2past6 --> Needs vs Wants

or

Buy the one I need and not the one I want. If I don't know what I need, then I have no need. If I already know what I need, don't ask.... just buy. Eat roti later.

There both very sharp. I don't know what you would be using it for but on a 5D or 7D with the 1.5 crop factor your talking 42mm for the 28 and 75mm for the 50mm.. If you not sure and it's more of just wanting a new toy to add to your photo gear then go with the 50mm F:1.7 it's faster better for low light may be a tad sharper too. But really you can't go wrong it's your choice both great lenses and can be had cheap. Good luck in you choice!

Thanks to all for their comments, had a lobang for a good deal on the 28mm, but it's gone now, I hesitated too long. :mad2:

Was actually looking at getting the 50mm 1.7 after all the great reviews , but with the 1.5 crop factor, becoming 75mm, a little wide for an all purpose walk around lens. Did the reverse maths and a 35mm becomes a 52mm which is great, but no one seems to talk about any Minolta 35mm Primes, not to mention that no-one seems to be selling one, or am I mistaken??

So will have to look out again for a good deal on the 28mm.

use a 35mm f/1.4 lens recently looking back at the pics the sharpness is unbelieveable at f/2 already....if i ever came across another lens like that at a reasonable price..i'll grab it;p

Interesting.. is it really that 50mm lens will be 75mm on KM5D? I don't think so..
It's just that the area of view is equal to 75mm fullframe at the same distance btw the camera and object if you compare the 50mm lens on KM5D and 75mm full frame.

A 50mm lens still produce an image that is propotion to normal eyes viewing without distortion.. I don't know about 28mm as this lens is more for wide prime at full frame..
Imagine I have a 17mm lens.. with a camera with 3x crop factor.. the image will not be the same btw the 17mm and 50mm lens.. eventhough the area of view is the same when I'm using 17mm lens on a 3x crop camera and a 50mm fullframe..

Example.. can a 300mm turn to 450mm on a digital camera.. NO for zoom factor.. but YES for viewing area..
Imagine you have a 450mm on fullframe.. you can view the same magnifying object as 1.5 distance more as compare to 300mm on a digital..

Yes you talking sense, my point was to do with the field of view, and because of the 1.5 crop factor, the field of view of a 50mm lens on the 5D would be equivelent to the field of view of a 75mm lens on a full fram camera.

Since this is a prime lense.. isn't it by just walking backward few steps you will get the same field of view?

Nice colour and sharpness... may hold back a little for sharpening, it starts creating artifact.. anyway... just nick picking..

I am looking for 135mm f2.8 too.. sold it few years back, now looking to collect some prime lenses.
