I think in amongst the D90 menu (somewhere), there's a setting for the type of battery used. Maybe you can try setting that.

well there's four. already tried 2 out of 4.. hmm, but was told that the battery type was just an indicator for the system to judge the battery life rather than anything else..

just continue to try.

hi haime, please elaborate more.
u using phottix grip too with 1 nikon battery and 1 3rd party.. so if during shoot, 1 went flat the other can just switch over without issue?

mind to share your 3rd party battery brand?

sorry late reply..
Im using a POttix 3rd party grip with a orginal Nikon Battery and a DiViPOwer (3rd Party- 1one year warranty ) battery. No problem using single or double. And after the power drain off which ever one.. with kick in the next one.. Works well on me..

Had some friends who had used POttix 3rd party Battery. Out of 5, 3 had complaint and switch to DiViPower. Im not recommending or trying to help DiViPower sales.. but from my experience with DiVIpower battery, it works as good as the original battery which i cant even notice the differences. The only difference is that .. after full charge both battery and you keep it for about a few days.. I can see slight decrease of power comparing to Original Battery.

Mine third party is call "Camera Devices" bought from TK, no problem using single or double in the grip except it doesn't auto switch to the other when one of them is flat :dunno:

I just keep it as last resort

issue remains unresolved.
1 last confirmation required from someone who owns this phottix grip, 1 original nikon batt, 1 phottix battery, + D90.
any issues with battery if 1 turns flat, and D90 just display the warning and stops you from shooting?

met up with Fisher from reddotphoto, tested with 1 guys's D90 and D80, new grip old grip, different batteries combination. surprisingly all 3 bodies faced the same issues when they mentioned its was fine previously.

tot of battery compatibility issue but do not seems possible.
need someone with an original grip to isolate issue..

Just both a new Phottix BP-D80 for my D90 and encountered problems right after one of my batteries went out. It doesn't auto-switch to the fully charged battery. Im using 1 original nikon battery @ 7.4V 1500mAh and a 3rd party @ 7.4V also but 2800mAh. When my 2800mAh battery went down, it cannot auto-switch to the 1500mAh battery. and in the battery info, always primary selected is the 2800mAh.

Any thoughts about this or anybody experienced the same problem.

Thanks.:dunno:

seems like another 1 with same issue.

yes bogzy, similar issues occurs to me when tested with 3 different bodies (another D90, D80) all encountered the same thing.
tested with different batteries too. unable to isolate and determine the issue.

only way possible is to get someone with a working phottix grip to borrow for few seconds to test on your / mine cam body to prove.

Mine is OK. Here are the results.

Phottix BP-D80 (S/No. 20250xx ) Auto Switching Between Batteries.

Results indicates if the D90 w/ Phottix BP-D80 automatically switches to the Left Slot battery when the Right Slot battery runs out.

Initial battery is in the Right Slot.

Nikon = Original Nikon EN-EL3E
Phottix = Phottix EN-EL3e ( For D300 )

Left Slot / Right Slot / Results
Phottix / Nikon / OK
Nikon / Nikon / OK
Phottix / Phottix / OK
Nikon / Phottix / OK

Also, on an original Nikon grip, it was able to auto switch from Nikon battery to Phottix battery.

i using two phottix battery both work fine..., one battery can last around 1.4k shot for mine...

If you using Original Nikon EN-EL3E, there no need for you to change the type of battery in the battery setting. For other types of battery like AA rechargeable battery, then yes.

Hi Akagi,

I having the same problem with MB-D80, the camera just auto sleep mode even power switch is on and 1 more full battery in the grip, once I take out the flat battery. Things works again.

Suspect is the original battery & third party battery doesn't work together. Will try next time with 2 original battery. May be you can try 2 original or 2 third party battery and see if the problem still exist.

Probably I have shoot less, it take me longer time to use up 1 original battery power :bsmilie:
Using 2 original battery with MB-D80, it auto switch to another battery without notice.

Just to update, original Nikon (MB-D80 on D80), it was able to auto switch from Phottix battery to Nikon Battery.

The Phottix battery was bought during April 2009.

ok thanks for the feedback on the compability :)
i guess down to the bottom, all are facing no issues with using 3rd party grip or nikon grip with mixture of 3rd party battery or origin.

I will check privately with some nikon-ers .. perhaps its down to my suay luck to end up with a body / grip that cause the issue. 2 bad cannot go NSC as I'm using 3rd party tool

Not sure if the sequence of insertion of batteries affects the outcome. For the testing, I insert one battery first, power-on, check the battery status, power-off, insert the other battery, power-on and check the battery status.

Maybe you can try cleaning the internal contacts for the battery grip in the D90 body.

never realli did take them apart after putting them on.
only thing is that after a shoot.. if nothing on the next day or so on, i will jus eject the batteries to open the circuit in the grip.
but that should be any issue..

wonder y

phottix grip +
phottix batt on right, nikon batt on left
Auto switched when right phottix batt ran out...
