35mm summilux pre-asph

new to rangefinders and found out that the older version of the 35mm summilux (pre-asph) is a great size, small and unobtrusive.

any thoughts on this lens, and viable price range? i'm confused that some are made in canada and others in germany. i suppose the origin will impact pricing as well.

i just understand the main diff is sharpness when comparing with the current model design.

any thoughts or advice appreciated.

When you add in the filter Series VII, then it's not that compact. :-) There's no thread for you to screw in a filter on the lens, so u will need a Leica Series VII hood and slot the filter into the hood which can be unscrew to house the filter. Great lens, low contrasts and glows quite a bit!!! Find the later version like the titanium one.

If you want small compact lens, look for 50 Rigid Summicron too.

I'm using a late issue German-made titanium pre-asph.

It's fantastically small ( around the same size as the 35mm nokton ). That being said, it has a different look to modern lenses at wider apertures ( wide open it 'glows' somewhat), but stopped down it is very sharp.

At F11.

I didn't pay that much for it and quite like how it's almost schizoid in nature, performing like two different lenses at different apertures. Hope this helps!

ah, so it cant take a filter on directly... hmm, i've been checking out and a lot of people seems to lead towards it makes more sense to put money into new 35mm cron.

Anyone knows if the Summicron 35mm rectangular hood is available for sale on its own in Singapore?

It takes series VII filter (or use a Leica E49 filter in reverse) with the #12504 hood. At f1.4 'glows' nicely & f2 quite similar to bokeh king (Cron35mm version4 or preAsph).

Agreed. In the case of the filter, if u can find the hood, just drop in any normal UV filter and screw it tight. I use a cheapo hoya on mine with no problems.

Of course the purists might scoff, but it works.

just to check up on the human archives :)

how many versions of the 35 lux pre-asph are there? i understand the 4th versions onwards are german, while the earlier ones are canadian?

thx again

It's the longest lived M-lens (1961-1995). Earlier version takes E41 filter, then changed to Series VII. Also earlier ones has infinity lock. Optically, all version same except later version has better coating, thus better performance(?). Titanium version in 1992 to match Ti M6 classic.

Nice shots.

I like this fast and compact 35mm.

Wide open, it has lower contrast and some softness. Strong prosperity to light flare as seen from above shot that can be used to its effect.

Detail is defined with some softness.

All shots wide open on M8.2. Vignette in PP.

Gommy, not sure how E49 in reverse can be used? After you have mentioned, I went to try, but cannot fit.

I have tried with Leica filter only. The 'secret' is to seat the filter with the threads facing out in the retainer portion of the hood.
Hope this is clear enough.:)

Bro, only you will give illustrations. Good form!

I have a Version 2 (i think) of this tiny summilux 35mm pre-asph lens, and just picked up a rectangular summicron 35mm asph hood for it from Sir. Gommy himself.
Fits perfectly. The hood is very compact too, so keeps the entire kit compact. Looks v.cool too. It does impede turning of the Aperture ring a bit, but that's something I can live with.

Pic of the hood & lens on an M2.

My summilux 35mm pre-asph lens renders beautifully. I love the size and the pictures it takes.

this is the last lens in my wishlist haha. I saw some in seoul but decided to wait for a while.

Gommy, very kind of you to illustrate this in CS. Thanks! I do not have E49 UV/IR filter, looks like the Leica UV/IR filter OD can fit into 12504 hood. This is great, can definitely use this method for digital M8.

However, my Leica UVa filter (13329) OD is somehow slightly bigger and cannot fit into the 12504 hood. :(

Thanks for sharing your know-how. :)

You're most welcome.:)
I think this #13329 E49 UVa was a low profile filter made specifically for the MATE to decrease vigneting. I'm not sure if that's the reason cos B+W slim filters are slight bigger in Ø. Maybe a regular E49 UVa (#13328) may fit.:dunno:
I may have a #13328 that came with my MATE, I'll check & let you know.

Yap, the E49 (13329) I have is the low profile type. I already have the serie VII Leitz UVa and Hoya 81B filters, I don't mine swap with your E49 UV/IR filter for use with M8..... :bsmilie:

:)

hehehe, I meant to swop your #13329 for my #13328 not #13412. Anyway, I managed to find & just bought a new #13329. :)
