Hi all,

Just wondering if anybody knows the real difference between the 1990 35mm Summilux ASPHERICAL lens versus the current one?

Is it limited in numbers or something? Seems more expensive 2nd hand than a current model 2nd hand one.

Thanks.

The first version (marked "ASPHERICAL") has two aspherical elements and was of limited production, whereas the current one (marked "ASPH") has a single aspherical element.

According to Erwin Puts' "Leica Lens Compendium", the performances and fingerprints of both lenses are almost identical. Writing about the ASPH version:

There are a few very subtle differences: the ASPH version has slightly lower contrast on axis, but a more even performance in the field at apertures 1.4 and 2. From 2.8 both are equal in image quality.
Doesn't sound as if there are noticeable differences in normal usage. The first version's high price is probably only due to its appeal to collectors.

Thanks for that.

How much do you think it should cost 2nd Hand?

According to Dan Colucci's price guide, the 35 'lux ASPHERICAL is around US$3500.

You'll be lucky if you can get it at that price now.

These lenses fetch as high as USD$4000-4500 for mint condition ones.
