scan the whole strip of negative, including the sprocket holes, it will give more clues what goes wrong..

What should i be looking for?

Can it be the camera or lenses that is spoiled?

looks like some kind of light leak,

but unlikely the problem cause by the lens.

so if leak is only inside the frame, and noting happen outside the frame, than could be the shutter problem.

if outside the frame have sign of light leak, than problem could be from the film, you camera or the lab,

than we need to see how is the pattern like.....

At low shutter speeds, you may not have this problem.

At high shutter speeds, you have vertical banding. This is due to malfunction in the synchronisation of 1st shutter curtain & 2nd shutter curtain.

AE-1 Program has a horizontal cloth-curtain focal plane shutter.

Hmmm my guess its the camera... don't think its the film or lab..

I would recommend Pentax K1000. Fully manual, fun to play with and can be easily obtain below $180.

Have you check the condition of the film back seal foam? If the light leak is also outside the frame, it's very likely the foam has deteriorated. You can use a toothpick to check the seal on the groove where the camera back meet the body. If it's stickly, the foam needs to be replaced.
