30fps to 25fps

Hi bros,

Just shot some video 720p/30fps, 1/60 shutter speed, on my Canon 500D in PAL. I've imported the clips as 720p/50i(PAL) format into my editing software and the clips playback fine, no jerks or jitter.

Is it because since the camera had recorded the video in PAL, therefore the clips had automatically been converted to PAL/25fps. So when I import the PAL video though shot as 30fps, it is still PAL format to PAL format, the video plays back smooth. I'm talking about watching the video with naked eyes as opposed to any technical tests. It looks fine even after I downcoverted to Standard Definition.

So just curious, is it really fine? Anybody knows?

The 500D records 720p at 30fps, as you say. It is not PAL. The PAL video setting on the cam is only for viewing on an external TV monitor, it doesn't mean the videos are recorded as PAL.

When you play back the video on a PC, it will still be 30fps, but if you convert to SD PAL then the editing program or conversion software (whatever you are using) will be doing a frame rate conversion to 25p or 50i. If it looks fine then it should be fine. There may be some jerkiness if there are things moving in the video, but if it looks ok to you then no point worrying about it.
