28mm lens testing

Hello...

Good sometime hence testing 3 lenses that I have which all have f2.8 or better.

Sigma AF 28mm f1.8 (read f1.7 on my camera) -- this is the first generation lens (not the latest EX DG) so it is a full frame lens
Minolta AF 28mm f2.8
Minolta AF 28-75 f2.8 (sorry for misspelling on the my example)

remember on the Sigma I shoot at f1.8 (so all wide open to be fair so DOF is shallower)

I must admit that the Sigma one performed really well in terms of sharpness, I haven't use it to shoot anything else yet as I just received the lens for few days.

28mm-75mm f2.8 D lens is the softest amongst the 3 unless stop down 1 stop.

Interesting, I did a 28mm lens test at f4 as well on these 3 lenses:
28mm f2.8
28-135mm f4-4.5
17-35mm f2.8-4

Center Sharpness:
Same as the order above

Edge Sharpness:
28mm f2.8
17-35mm f2.8-4
28-135mm f4-4.5

One observation on the prime 28mm f2.8.. the shaprness is the almost the same from f2.8 to all f-stops.. amazing lens..

Just purchased the 28-75 f2.8.. like to compare with 28-135mm f4-4.5 lens.. when I have time.

the RS or non-RS version? i have the non-RS, but dunno how to test sharpness. take a picture of a knife?

There lot of way to test the sharpness...
test on figurine, newspaper or paper
best is by comparison as what agetan show

The G Lens without the G Tag....

My minolta 28mm f2 is no longer with me... friend of mine was moving to another state so wanted the lens... she was desperate, so I gave in...

ah well, now I have the Sigma 28mm f1.8, I believe it is about the same sharpness at f2.0, but with Sigma I have about 0.5 stop advantage.

ah... 28-135 is a fine lens, i used it alot with my 17-35.
do u think making a lens hood for 28-135 will do better flare control?

I think lens hood does help, but it can only help so much only. Most important thing is how you angle the camera from the light source to cut down the internal light reflection.

28-75mm f/2.8 is a nice lens also, but sometime I just find it too short for reaching far target.

But I am also wary about of the weight of 28-135mm :sweat: .

oh ya... its quite heavy.. built like a tank, feel like one too

edit: but i'm used to the weight after carrying it around for a few times

There is a collapsible rubber hood that can be used on the 28-135. Got it together with the lens when I bought it from a fellow Minoltian here. It does help.
