2018 camera forecast

2017 is ending on an exciting note with several rumors of new cameras in the horizon.
CES 2018 is slated for 9 Jan 2018 and already we know what will be highlight of the show for videographers.
The enlarged photos of Casey Niestat's GH5S more or less confirms the rumors and even the USD2500 pricetag has been leaked.
Barring any glitches, we can expect the same great GH5 features PLUS much cleaner high ISO performance.
The new sensor is rumored to come from Sony so we can safely assume that Sony will not sabotage GH5S sales by announcing a A7S III or an A9S for at least the first half of 2018.
Meanwhile, Canon is on a roll with their Dual Pixel Autofocus and will be kept busy in 2018 replacing all their 1" powershots with the new sensors now found in the GX10 camcorder. For videographers, a 2nd generation G3X will be very exciting but not before NAB April where a new XC could be announced.
4K could also be finally on the cards for some Powershot cameras.
On the APS-C front, Canon has too much to lose if they allow 4K in their mirrorless. So 2018 will see Canon milking the 80D sensor for all it's got. For CES, we will see a new EOS M50 that sits between the M5 and the M100. That position is now occupied by the M6 so it will be interesting to see how the M50 will be "crippled" vis-a-vis it single digit brethens.

The situation in the EOS-M lens line-up is getting embarrassingly ridiculous now with bodies outstripping the number of lenses available. So I expect Canon to launch at least two face-saving M primes by end of 2018.

We can expect the dearth of consumer camcorders to continue in 2018, with Sony paring back their long-recording line-up to just the AX700. It is perhaps safe to surmise that Pany will also drive the last nail into coffin containing their consumer camcorder business. Henceforth, the Lumix FZ range will replace that category all together.

Nevertheless, you will see a few new entry HD camcorders from Canon at CES with at least one that can rival the performance of the XA30. (read: a stretched DR 1/2" sensor cam)

As for Olympus, the EM5 could be ripe for a revamp by Photokina in September but it will likely be just a 4K reiteration on the same body.

Sony will likely announce the A9S in Q3 but it will cost more than the A9.

The FS5 is due for a Mark II version?

Anyway, it will be interesting to see statistics of sales of these individual products. I have always wonder how the sales of the GH5 is, compared to the rest.

My gut feeling is Sony has hit a roadblock with the next big tech - autofocus.
An FS5 mark 2 will not happen until it can address the elephant in the room - the C200.
Whether we will see a new FS5 in 2018 is contingent on Sony developing a new image processor capable of running the hybrid AF of the A6500 while recording at the bitrate and the framerate of the FS5.
