can't believe this is your first time taking macro, good job dude!

Use a tripod if u havent been using. Will improve these shots a lot in terms of sharpness.

Also, seems pretty noisy? can use software to improve. But u could do it with a tripod as well. =)

Looking good though.

Can b sharper! :D hee..

It will be good to post your settings and set up if you want some better advise. Will need to know how you took the shot.

Generally, soft, but you got the focal point on the eyes right (except the spider). Should increase the DOF.

sorry, the setting is 100mm, ISO 100, flash (and no tripod)

By the time you set-up the tripod, the insects will be disappear. So I have to sacrifice some sharpness for speed. Most of my macro shooting are within HDB estates.

Not sure what cause the softness problem but if you show us the settings, we can roughly know the problem.

Softness can cause by
- shallow DOF
- shutter speed too slow
- insect is moving or environment is windy

technical stuff aside, composition looks good. Got potential :D

Try using ISO 200 (if you're using canon u supposedly get more dynamic range at this ISO rather than ISO 100, helps ur flash fire at a less powerful setting too) and 1/250s (or how ever fast ur normal flash sync allows, dun use High-speed or FP mode as it won't have the motion freezing effect anymore). Better still, add a monopod to that and you're good to go. I'm able to get tack sharp images with this setup/settings even though my hands shake like crazy. :p

i think the last pic ... that spider ... is going to lay some eggs brudda ...
