Hi, since the hot topic is now on the 1D Mk 3, I would like to find out if you are only allowed to choose either the 1Ds Mk 2 (FF, Digic 2 Processor, 16.7 megapixels, 4fps) or the 1D Mk 3 (1.3 crop, Digic 3 Processor, 10.1 megapixels, 10fps) , which one will you choose?

The camera will be used mainly for the following:
1. Group shots. (Outdoor, talking about 500 people group, you will stand somewhere high and take pix on the group of people)
2. Indoor shots like concert, auditorium. (Audience, stage group photo, music performances)
3. Landscape.
4. Occassionally golf games.
5. Of course others like protrait, macro, etc, will not be common.

Please vote and support your answer. Thanks.

You won't look back with the latest.

you are comparing 2 different cameras. Each have it own market targets. The 1Ds2 is for FF while the mk3 will be good for sports.

Speed vs FF

Please rem that some functions are good to have and not your needs. You need to know what you need and not just kep buying the latest.

For me I'm happy with my 1Dmk2 cos I need the 45points, fast AF. any other extra is a bonus but not a need for me. Things like Picture style can be added in PP.

Humm...but I long for the 14bit dynamic range, and the ability to AF at -1 EV. I do lots of indoor and concert shoot, so the ability to AF at -1 EV will be really something I need!

Hi, I have already stated the common areas of usage as per my 1st post and I shall copy and paste again:

As long as you do not have sports in the equation, it is quite an easy choice. I also see landscape, group shots of 500 that I presume will end up in large print (xtra MPs count).

- 1Dsmk2.

Why not consider a 5D? Does the same job at a lower cost. Has minor noise advantage over the 1Dsmk2.

I believein terms of cost: 5D + 1Dmk3 + extras = 1Dsmk2.

The feeling of 1 series and 5D is a totally different experience, which could not be described in words. Eg, the handling, controls, etc. Shutter sound also makes a lot of difference! And the most important thing, picture quality!

:D

Although I really think that I should tell you which model to pick, I have to say that if you're asking us which to choose to suit your needs, then maybe you're unsure of what each model offers that the other doesn't.

And why aren't portraits and macros, etc, will not be common usage for either of these 2 cameras? I would have thought that most of all the 1DS MkII was eminently suited for portraits with its FF and high Pixel count. And the blindingly fast focusing speed of, at least, the 1D Mk II would be reallly great for macro shots. (Can't tell about the Mk.III as I have not had a chance to shoot with it yet).

But as the man says, get the 5D as it is a good substitute for the 1DS Mk. II for 1/4 of its price and get the 1D Mk.III for all the other attributes that it has.

(I'm waiting for the price of the Mk. III to stabilise before buying it, hehe!)

I voted for the 1D Mk. III as I've the 5D and also the 1D Mk.II. Don't really need the extra pixels of the 1Ds Mk.II and am enthralled by the new features of the Mk. III. So for me, an easy decision.;)

If only these 2 to choose from den its the mk3 becos its cheaper and have better function. Use the difference to get a very wide angle for your landscape.

i would go for the MKIII, and after trying it out at office...

i seriously want to camp there and snap it up for the events... hahaha...

its good.. so far from people who have used and me who have used for like 3 hrs.. :bsmilie: :bsmilie:

I wonder if you'll say that if you have used it for a whole day. For some people who do not have the physique, the weight of a 1 series camera body plus a f 2.8 L lens can be quite daunting. Because of the weight, I'd rather use a lighter body like a 20D or a 5D instead of my 1D Mk.II when I'm lazy. When you go on a photographic trip for 7 days and more, and carrying the camera for about 8 hours a day, the strain will tell if you are not fit! That's my experience!

Then train for it!

Is the 1D Mk 3 all that heavy? I can handle a 20D with a battery grip and 70-200 2.8L IS for about 4 hours during my school's event. Is that comparable to a 1D Mk 3's weight?
