180mm Macro Lense

I am seriously considering upgrading my 90mm Macro to the Sigma or Tamron 180mm F3.5.

Would the Macro experts out there give some advice as to whether a 180mm Macro lense is suitable for handheld operation?

Would a 180mm lense give a shallower DOF than a 105mm at the same f-stop?

I got an identical quote for both brands (AP quoted Sigma at $1320, CP quote Tamron at the same price). Any comments on which is the better buy?

Please refer to Practical Photography magazine June edition which has an article on this lens. It stated distortion & flare and image quality is only marginally better than the Sigma 50 macro. The problem is the weight, just under 1 kilo and the AF is slow.
