Yes, you should invest in a SanDisk card reader for problem free transfers. I used a no brand direct from AliExpress multi card reader which works fine when I transfer JPEGs, shifting RAW files was problematic.

For me it depends on the amount of cash flow that I have. If I just want to try out a new lens and don't really need it - just rent. Otherwise I'll fork out to purchase the equipment if it's to serve me in the long run on a daily basis. Just my opinion.
