For me I prefer 50mm f1.8. 35mm is not here nor there. I believe D 3100 comes without motor so u may not be able to auto focus for 50mm. Why don't u consider D90 as it more versatile in lens choice and price is also not much different. If you use it for fun, go for D3100.

I suggest u should use flash ( even built-in flash should be fine. ) but dont forget to put flash diffuser. Use Point Metering. Crop and framing put more attention. Then you try again next time. i think u will get better photo.
