I haven't used the 2.8 II but from what I've read the f/4 IS is the sharper lens between the two. If you really want to do astrophotography pick up a 14mm samyang f/2.8 off Amazon -under 400SGD.

It happens on mine. Hope canon SG does something about it! There are definitely scenarios where it could cause under exposure.
