in your case, my noob opinion would be that you are metering at the wrong place. try to use spot or partial metering, meter at somewhere as dark as your subject and hold it. then aim at your subject again and shoot. regarding the flash, if your metering is wrong, which in your case the camera...

you know wat, dun even bother to get em new. get em 2nd hand :D got myself 2 3rd party nb-2lh for 15bucks. hehe now got 3 batts. they can hold their charge quite well. instead of spending for new ones, you can instead save $$$ and get a battery grip.

hi, am using the icase also. got fed up of microwavin em gels, after getting rid of some lens, i can actually fit a hungry hippo in it. RH is now 40%. ohh btw i also took out the silica gel pack, only wif the hippo now :D

am using a 420ex. in AV mode, i choose high speed sync flash which will automatically set the shutter speed to 1/200s. E-TTL will adjust the flash power necessary. i think you can just do the selection on the flash itself. cheerz.
