imo, UV filter: use cheap cheap (depending lah) to protect your expensive glass :3 I have never actually taken a shot without the UV filter before to be honest.

IMHO, there's not much diff to me between 450D and 500D. Movie mode is nice, but I don't use video recording often, even on my mobile phone. The upgraded sensor is your own preference. Though I believe the 500D comes with DIGIC 4.
