yupe, true. no doubt that 720 60p on DSLR is consider great. you sound like a very professional video production guy :) seldom got end user care about all this framerate, NTSC, PAL stuffs...

and dont forget, the framerate of dlsr video recording still slow, we cant do slow motion like 75fps in full HD mode. in the future if DLSR can do that, or pro camcorder can take nice still photo, then i would say it will become one.

if you travel a lot, you might want to consider the tamron 17-50 f2.8, slightly longer reach compare to the 17-40. and the f2.8 is useful in low light condition.

i'm using di866 on my 550D, with eneloop, no problem at all, so it wont be a compatible issue.

if you have the budget, go for canon 17-55 f2.8 if not, tamron 17-50 f2.8

i use the camera mostly for travel as well i use the 18-55 kit lens for a few month then i jump to tamron 17-50 2.8. the 18-55 is a good kit lens, but if u want to get a good nite shot with your gf in it, you better get a good flash. cuz even the ISO help, but you can't really get the focus...

how low is low? previous i was stuck to this qns, then i thought tammy 17-50 2.8 help... but at the end i end up with a nissin di866 attach to my 550D hotshoe. it really depend on wat kind of low light condition, outdoor travel, ballroom function, sometime even ur living room can consider a low...

i just bought the lens last week. a very good lens for the price. but i find the Auto focus slightly slow, heard the EF-S 17-55 f2.8 focus much faster. but u pay more then double for it.
