Been following this thread...just wanna say I agree with TS that its more worth it to get super zoom prosumer, but ONLY if the user doesn't intend to buy other lenses. Afterall the biggest advantage of an SLR is lens interchangeability.
i own the 100mm f2.8 and from my experience it isnt enough. i recommend renting a 100-400mm for the zoo trip. since everyone is sharing their white tiger pics, here is mine, taken with the 100-400mm
40D most definitely. i bought a 450D and sold it to buy a 40D after 2 months. the 40D (used) has a lot more features which can be obtained for the price of a 450D (new). since you already know how to handle a 450D, u'd def enjoy the 40D much more.
i think u will have to sacrifice the details on either the flower or the bug. the best in btwn solution i can think of would be to use AE lock or half press on the flower then the bug to find out the ideal exposure for the flower and the bug and average it yourself. this will probably cause both...
