how about 30mm f1.4 instead of 50mm? will my 18-55mm3.5-5.6 IS be sufficient to use as a zoom lens for weding?

As I already have canon 18-55mmIS lens kit but the pics are not that sharp. is it due to the small aperture?? sorry cos i;m still be newbie ..thats why i am considering a single focal length lens.... hehe

I am a canon 40 d user, I;m open to trying out 3rd party lens. but ppl tell me canon lens brings out beautiful pics. but most 3rd party lens are generally cheaper no? i;ve read good review abt the sigma 50mmf1.4 too
