I had same dilemma as you earlier this yr, I needed more zoom than kit 18-70 (great unit!!).
I looked at various 3rd party lens... but decided heck - I won't "spoil" my NIKON. :sticktong
So I invested in a AFG 28-200... good unit too, same physical size as 18-70.
My only grumble is 28...
Maybe its waiting for "focus"?
Flick the switch to (M)anual focus so that no chance its waiting.
My D70 also run on Lexar 80X 1GB and I get 3fps continuous no problem.
I take a lot of RC car racing picture so its quite common to take like 20-30 shots sequence.
Great work!! I was also considering either G or ED.

However are the results just as soft when not using at 300mm extreme?
you need light to get into the lens.
the way you say it, if you make a cardboard into a cokin filter you'll just be covering the whole lens..??!
think the WB adjust needs 'sufficient' light to illuminate the white area too. I tried doing it when first started playing with D70 last week...
Lithium batteries actually work pretty well in cold, unlike nicad/NiMH & alkalines. (Nokia/Ericsson phone batteries work ok even when kept in an outside pocket whilst skiiing.)
Nothing else on D70 should be too much headache. Electronics LIKE the cold!
At extreme cold... have heard of...
