If AF hunting is the issue, switch to manual focus. Cakes and cookies are static, so manual focus is no issue at all.

Yes. D90 built-in flash has commander function. You can consider SB600. This will enable you to do wireless off-camera flash using Nikon's CLS.

Would suggest you get either the SB600 (if your camera's body flash have commander function), otherwise SB700 would be good. A flash is a good investment that would outlast 2-3 camera bodies. They are more robust than your camera, need not worry too much.

The SB28 will not have TTL with D90 as D90 uses a new TTL system, which is i-TTL. But you can use it on the D90 if you use Auto Aperture (AA) mode, which uses the sensor from the flash. But this means you cannot do off-camera flash. D90 needs either the SB600 or SB800 to have i-TTL.. Hope...

It depends on how close you like your subjects to be. I have both. When I was using film, I prefer the 85mm over 50mm, as I like half body shots. When I shoot digital, I prefer the 50 mm over 85 mm, as the 85mm becomes about 128mm and requires more space between me and the subject...

Suggest a Polaris, probably under SGD 300. Ruby Photo should have them. Can do cordless synch. I bought mind from fotoguide (not around anymore) for about $250.
