Just an update to the original post. a) D300 AF beep now works fine. Turns out all it needed was a custom settings menu reset ;) b) Shutter count as of this posting 37,102 Thanks!

Just picked up mine last night. I agree on sharpness and contrast wide open. However, does anyone find the focus speed a bit slow though? In comparison, my 35 f/2 seems to snap to focus faster.

You can try GIMP. http://www.gimp.org It is free. As to how it handles, I am not sure , never used it myself but I think you can get a bunch of info off the site.
