You could spend money on lenses first and continue to use your bro's camera. For e.g. an utlra-wide angle lens and macro lens would open up very different possibilities for you and allow you to develop your skills better.

Bring along a monopod/tripod too which helps when you want to capture motion blur with slower shutter speeds.

I had both and sold both in favour of the 50 f1.4 which I seldom use too :p I'm lazy and usually go with a zoom (18-200 IS stayed on my camera most times). I do find 35f2 better for general photography while 50mm focal length is more suited to shooting small kids (both on crop sensor). 28...

never felt the urge to upgrade from my 40D when 50D is out. 7D is a different case though, I fell in love with it when it's announced ;p

for general events a 18-200 IS would do as well especially if you could use flash ;p anyway, not many customers would be looking for CA in photos unless they are photo enthusiasts too.

Image quality is pretty alright when you stepped down on the kit lens though (say to f8). I've used the first version non-IS 18-55 kit lens for 2 weddings and the couples like the results.

I have the Canon 18-200 IS and Sigma 18-250 (long story why I had both). The Canon seemed sharper and focused faster. Anyway, you could try out the lenses at the shop. Try taking pictures at various focal lengths to compare with apertures wide open and stepped down to f8.

Interesting read. For me, the unerlying message is to use the right tool for the situation ;p Brand doesn't matter. I've used sigma lens on a canon body with an external nikon flash powered by olympus batteries and setup carried around in a fujifilm bag.

Just go for the lens that you'll be willing to bring out to shoot ;p weight is usually an important factor for me and after all these years, I've never really bought any heavy lens (until the sigma 150-500mm which i got recently but I'll be driving when I carry the lens around). 1 stop...

confirmed (but based on what I read ;p i bought 2 originals for backup). 5D MK II and 7D doesn't show battery bar with 3rd party batteries. but good ones could last as long as the originals. was reading reviews that some 3rd party ones made for 5D MkII doesn't fit as well in the 7D even...

Another option is to get a lighter tripod or improvise on the surroundings. I've used railings, dustbins, fences, tables, camera bags, telephone booths etc to support my camera for low light shots.
