Just want to chime in here that this discussion is so useful for me. I've a 550D and my husband is showing interest in photography again (he's got really very interesting eye for angles, very different from me) and I'm super thrilled. But it doesn't seem to make sense to buy two beginner DSLR...

Make sure the lenses can be used on your Canon though, e.g. Tamron has lenses made to fit Canon or Nikon - you need to get the right one. I'm not sure Nikon lenses can be used on Canon.
