The best converter i have used without losing video quality is "VoltaicHD" but this application is not free.

1) Original video from your Nikon D3s' which is 1280x720(HD 24fps).
2) I believe that when you edit your video in Movie Maker, your composition was set to 1920x1080, so when you put your 1280x720 you can see a black space around it.
I suggest to Keep your composition into 1280x720.
