Yup at least the Taipei airport specifically require photography tripods to be checked in, the notice was displayed at almost every check in counters when I was there last year. Been to many European countries by hand carrying tripods on board without any issues, there was only one instance...

the light pollution in Tromso city itself is actually very bad, u can only see aurora in the city IF the activity is REALLY strong.. to maximize the chance to see aurora, u will need to get out of the town, join the many available tours. Enjoy! :)

the only thing to worry is the reduced battery life in freezing cold environment, just bring 1 or 2 extra batteries (and keep them warm) and you will be fine, you should worry more about yourself, cameras are tougher than us.
