    Actually I tried that with 4x5 sheet film, no holder, just on glass bed, no top glass. I got a lot of Newton rings. But I did put it U-shape down as per Epson's suggestion. The key seems to be to ignore Epson's orientation suggestion: right now I scanned a series of 35mm negs in their holder...

    Thanks again... somehow I didn't see the link to their home page. It's so odd that Epson would not see this problem right at the start... In the meantime I've been experimenting to see how far I can get with homebrew solutions and I get much improvement from scanning the film upside down...
