I would suggest to wait as a new DX camera may be announced soon. Between the two the D7000 is a much newer camera with better Noise Reduction and Dynamic Range, the D300s is a bit long in the tooth.

I have both lenses. I find that the 16-85 is better all round, especially on travels the 16mm gives you a wider angle. Most of the time I do not need to go beyond 85mm anyway and from experience the 16-85 will be able to cover 90 pct if not more of your shots. If you want longer reach then...
