    Anyone tried IR on 5D

If I'm not wrong, all Canon DSLR has a filter in front of the sensor that blocks out IR. So you can't take IR pics despite using the r72 filter unless you mod your camera to remove the filter (can't remember what's that filter called). Maybe the IR experts can advice....

    EFS 17-55 f2.8 focusing problem

So far, I have never encounter any lens or camera (AF) that is able to focus on a white wall (or any even coloured wall).

    17-40 Barrel Distortion

Actually, the latest DPP from Canon (think 3.5.x) can do lens barrel correction. But must shoot in raw and then convert. Also old cameras are not supported - my 20D was not supported, but my 400D supported...

    EOS utility

No, they don't have it. They only have the updater. You would still need the installer CD to install the original s/w and then update it.

For me, I got it at AP (near 1 year ago), not sure about the price in CP. But should be around that range.

    Diff btw 420ex, 430ex, 430exII, 550ex, 580ex, 580exii

Bro, on contrary, for a flash light to charge faster, you need batts that can supply higher current. NiCd is so far the best, though they don't hold large charges to last that long. NiMH is the best compromise...

What's your favourite lens that you own?

Taht's the good thing about using Canon....can use lenses from other mounts. For me, my favourite lenses would be 17-40 and 100 f2.

    Auto shutdown.

Have you tried using another lens?

    Auto shutdown.

This will happen with any of my EOS camera on my Sigma lens. In the end, its the lens that's causing the cameras to shutdown. I have to take out the lens, batt in order to "reset" the camera.

Do you use your DOF preview?

Is to check out the depth of field to see if the range of "in focus" can cover what you have in mind in the picture. Might not be that useful for DSLR since you can view the pic taken immediately, but in the film era, DOF is a damn useful tool.

Do you use your DOF preview?

Yes I do. Like what bro calebk do too, I usually use at brighter f-stops (ie ≤f8).

buying for a friend who wants to learn photography

30D why not? Looking at the BnS, some are offering their 30D for $750 onwards. And get a 18-55mm f3.5-5.6 as a starter (I use this lens for about 1 year before I decided to get the 17-40L and my department's users didn't notice the not-so-sharp photos either) for $50. So all in, about $800 and...
