    Need help on flash

If your subject is posing behind sunset, no matter how much you up your iso also no use. This is one of a situation where flash helps.

    Fast lens vs VC/OS/VR/IS lens

Prefer fast lens. Previous experience with 55-200mm VR, it requires to hold the shutter for 2~3 seconds before VR can compensate and produce sharp image. Not so good for subject that move.

Indoor flash photos - DSLR or m43?

Better take m43 with fast apperture f1.8 ~ f2.8 since this is much easier to use than flash.

newbie needs help on dslr and len with budget $700

    why 17-50 2.8?

Reasons: 1) Lazy to change lens - imagine you are in event shooting, every seconds count. By the time you done with changing your lens, the model already changed various pose. 2) Multi functional - it's wide zoom lens (1mm wider than your normal zoom lens), constant fast aperture across zoom...

using 35mm f1.4 on crop for bokeh portraits - forget it!

Are you using 35mm onto a FF body? That would be wide angle portrait already. FF should pair with 50mm lens where as DX pair with 35mm for your full body portrait photo.
