I had the same problem with my 40D initially. Then started to use RAW instead of JPEG and select my own focus point. Then I realized it's not my DSLR. The problem was with me.

i dun have 17-50 so cannot honestly comment. I guess 17-50 may be better than 17-85 in terms of optics? The wider the range the worst the optics? Is this true?

17-85 has the advantage of being :lovegrin: light :lovegrin:and wide at 17mm but downside of small aperture. Its main use is for outdoors. Hard to call it an upgrade. But should be quite sufficient for your 400D for outdoor purposes. Not good for portraits esp indoors unless you have an...

I also have 50mm and I must say that its images are sharp with almost no distortion. Good lens! But I have to take the shots further away and move back and forth, sometimes may miss that moment... Maybe should get the 430 EX II... thanks for the suggestions!

I take photo of my 1 yr old son most of the time. I like the convenience of F4-5.6 17-85mm (came with my 40D) but the aperture is small. Most of the time I have to take with the built-in flash but the white balance looks a bit weird (needs tweaking in DPP) and the background is not well...
