The purpose of a lens hood is to prevent stray light from entering your lens causing flare in your images. To me it doesn't serve decorative purpose other than for the reason above and to double up as to prevent the front element of your lens from some knocking.

In local context, that means moot. Back to topic, as tomcat did mentioned, the warranty applies to camera bodies only and I feel any extension of warranty is a value add to Nikon owners be it 3 months or 5 years. Happy shooting everyone. :)
