Change your AF settings to AI Servo(not sure what it is for Nikon). Use the center focus point. Shutter speed above 1/200(depends on what effect you want/how fast your subject is) :)

I would say buy the 1022 now. Its a very good lens. Another alternative, you could buy the sigma 1224, which will also work on full frame. :)
