Good post there! Potential for a sticky, and perhaps expandable. :) Even computers I prefer to purchase at other places other than IT Show. Gives me a better environment to think through, try out and decide on purchase.

I am used to be tempted to get a battery grip, but after considering the look (weird on a D3100) and the weight, I gave that up. I rather spend the money on an extra battery, good tripod, etc. I can shoot for hours (6-7 average) on a single charge (300+ shots). Why need a battery grip...

I actually bought my 35mm f/1.8 from BnS here for $280. So far so good. I think it's important that the seller let's you do a thorough check of the lens before handling the cash over. Take your time to check the optics, aperture blades, etc. You can google or search through CS for the detailed tips.

Since the students are in a fixed sequence/order, just use two piece of photo slips, one for the student, another to attach to the photo. Put the printed photo and the slip in a clear plastic bag and arrange all the photos in order. The students then can just present the slip with the number...

I like #3 the most. If you take #4 directly in front of the head, that would be awesome. Not sure if it's the setup, but I use Raynox on my 18-55mm kit lens at 50mm. Took night macro shots at Lower Pierce using a torchlight to focus. And then use pop up flash with diffuser set to rear. ;)

I have the same problem too, but I am a bit lucky. I have 7 exposures on my first and 17 on my second roll. I am using ISO200 (as recommended by the manual). Some exposures are overlapped but probably I didn't turn the knob enough. I plan to try with ISO400 film. Gakkenflex version may be...
