Not stupid at all, in fact, a lot asked the same question, normally we use the flat surface against the lens but some Canon users told me the bead side facing the lens works great too. So depends on your camera make. And it's placed against the lens not further away. :)

Today Mino brought his Minolta and we've tried to shoot under very bright light source in burger king, very often, his camera would give error message when setting white balance. I assume it would be better to shoot an object under the light source and not directly at the light source.

Think along the line of complementary colors. Red will give you more green and blue will give you more yellow. :)

It can be either, you can shoot at the light source or the object under light condition. Also, if blue line is drawn, the beads facing in/out makes a difference too (because of the curvature on the beads, more/less blue light may enter. Please experiment with it and find one that suits your need...
